It’s not for the cock, it’s for an explosive gig, yeah?
Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip @ Stealth, Nottingham 29/09/07
On paper, on record and on the seemingly most valuable of things (these days)- myspace, Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip are great: Funny, clever, dry and sharp. However, at a live gig, it’s simply impossible to get over the fact that you’re watching a bloke on a laptop and another with a beard forming words that are lost through the PA system.
That’s the duo’s main barrier, (which proves impossible to overcome) the fact that the lyrics are incomprehensible. It’s like watching a band and only being able to hear the bass: listening to a poet who’s music is formed around his lyrics, when you can’t make out the words is just not fun.
After the disappointment of Dan le Sac and Scroobius Pip, Stealth is left feeling a little cold and lacking enthusiasm for the main act. This, however, disappears faster than an unfinished drink left on the bar as soon as Does It Offend You, Yeah? take to the limelight.
Like a bubblegum pop, electro tinted house of noise, Does It Offend You, Yeah? storm the stage in utterly ramshackle fashion and proceed to tear each and every member of the audience into a state of wide eyed, jaw locking anarchy. “Battle Royale” introduces itself as an unwritten hit by the French DJ duo, Justice, if only Justice were instead a group of mischievous little boys out their nuts on sugar and two penny sweets.
Current single, “Let’s Make Out”, raises things to another level all together. Arms flail, bodies jerk franticly and the barrier come this close to knocking out the lead singer. This is a point of no return and from now onwards the gig is deliciously dangerous and out of control.
With bass lines bigger than the whole room, drums that are louder than a bomb and synths that literally order you to dance like a moron , Does It Offend You, Yeah? are a massive success tonight. As the singer notes there’s “no fucking glowsticks” in sight, just a dark club room full of enlightened, wounded, wasted people at 2am, all having the time of their lives and four of them doing it onstage.

Excellent review.
I was so impressed by DIOYY, I didn’t even realise I’d heard a lot of their stuff.
I’ve linked to this from my blog.
