Holy Fuck@ Stealth 17/11/2007

 

Tonight, after the growing (in crew members and popularity) Tomb Crew have pelted out another insane mix of grime/drum and bass/electro mash ups, whipped up a complete storm and then vacated the area, it’s the Canadian Holy Fuck’s turn to bring the noise. Piles upon piles of electronic gear, with wires tangling all over the place, are hauled onto the stage. And then it keeps coming until the stage resembles something more like the inside of a spaceship in a 1970s sci-fi movie.

After everything’s plugged in and put into place, the band come onstage and position themselves in front of their various gadgets. Holy Fuck start with the strange but driving “Super Inuit”- a song which becomes a blurry of activity, bleeps and electrical moans dotted here and there, always with the pounding drums and keyboards keeping the song afloat. Other than the drums and bass guitar, the band seem to pay very little mind of conventional band or song structure; a series of odd, dark noises with little vocals other than distorted screams make up a lot of the songs- yet somehow this works fantastically. Holy Fuck create great intelligent dance music, slightly like LCD Soundsystem but with a little more subtlety.

Whilst there’s the drummer and bassist keeping the songs pulsating forwards with precision and meaning, the two other members of the band take the main focus. Each has a table/big box thing which is rammed with all sorts of electronic musical tools and aids (everything including a couple of keyboards each, a line of guitar effects pedals plugged into these and various other bits and bobs gaffer taped to the surface). Face to face, this gives the impression that the two are involved in sort of weird digital, musical battle agaisnt each other; like two fighter pilots in their cockpits with hands flailing everywhere and becoming a blur as they create their monstrous sounds.

“Lovely Allen” is a massive, epic sonic landscape with soaring melodies and rising and falling sections which make you want to jump up and punch the air, like the last freeze shot scene of a kids hollywood movie. This is possibly their most accessible moment and, tonight as the ending song, their best and most glorious. Making songs as big and epic as a spaceship with the finest details, as well as their clear originality is the charm of Holy Fuck and if they continue to play gigs like this, they can only keep getting better.
