Future of The Left @ Rock City Basement 07/12/07

Taking various members from Mclusky and Jarcrew, Welsh trio, Future of the Left bring their brand of monstrously heavy rock to a sizeable if relatively quiet crowd tonight at Rock City.

After grinding, pulsating opener “The Lord Hates a Coward” works into a climax and then finishes abruptly, there is an almighty, brain rattling shriek of “YEEEEAAAAAAAOOOOOWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!” The banshee-like noise has come from some over eager punter in the front row. “That’s exactly what I was thinking…” comments singer Andy Falkous.

When Future Of The Left get going, their music takes on a life of its own- it’s as if the songs are pelting earthwards with no brakes and no compromises. Last single, “Small Bones, Small Bodies”, for example, is a ferocious, stomping maniac of a song. Working through a snarling, growling first half of the song, it then escalates into mad, frantic pinnacle which makes you feel as if you’re ripping a hole into another universe. The band sound a little like a more mental Queens of The Stone Age- great hooks combined with undeniable sheer force. The crowd, though obviously appreciative of the band, clap and applaud politely, but- ”YYYEEEEAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!!”…he’s at it again.

“He’s just found out there’s going to be a seventh series of Sex and The City” quip the band. It soon becomes apparent though that this over zealous fan will be making this weird, inhuman sound between each and every song. At first it provides the band an opportunity to display their native wit (a strange comparison with the viciousness of their music) but after a while they become a bit annoyed and start asking if he’s on crack. A valid question, indeed.

Set closer “Adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood” starts with a faux Western film chorus of “Roll on” before obliterating it all with drums loud enough to crack your skull and bass so strong and low it gives half the people in the room orgasms. The song twists into an uncontrollable, immense climax. The song, and the whole set, is amazing- played with utter strength, velocity and conviction.
