It’s not for the cock, it’s for being young and lost.
Young and Lost Club Tour
Naked and The Boys, Noah & The Whale/The Bodega Social/04.02.08
Young and Lost Club is a new-ish label which provides a home to some rather ‘indie by numbers’ sort of bands such as Good Shoes and Pull Tiger Tail. This is not really a dig at these bands, they have some fun, catchy tunes but have not really created anything to write home (or on your music blog) about. So, when The Young and Lost Club shoved some of their newer bands in a van and spat them out in Nottingham the wonderful night that ensued was not predicted.
First up was Naked And The Boys who, although not officially signed to the label, are putting out single ‘If You Find Love’ on Young And Lost Club later this month. The band have an entirely pleasant sound which is not unlike the Kooks but they have a more interesting take on the soul/pop sound with the addition of a countrebasse. Their short, lively set was sprinkled with enthusiasm and had the potential to be a successful showcase for the band, but sadly much of the audience seemed more concerned with carrying on their conversations than paying attention to a band they hadn’t heard of.
Once Noah and The Whale (minus Laura Marling, who absent due to the release of her solo album) graced the stage with their perfectly styled presence the audience showed they were perfectly capable of manners. The band quickly launched into a slow, yet beautifully sharp folk song on top of which Charlie Fink’s strong, distinctive vocals happily sailed. When the song, which Fink told his audience was “about love”, climaxed into a pinnacle of heart wrenchingly beautiful noise it suddenly exploded into ‘hoedown’ of energy and passion.
The band progressed through the rest of their half hour set with a confident ease unusual for such a new band. They’re an extremely charming band to see live, even when Charlie said “Nottingham, it’s just guns and Robin Hood, isn’t it?” the audience took it well as it was preceded by a sincere thanks for such a large turn out. Their set was fairly short and the band swung effortlessly between tender, delicate moments to rip-roaring bursts on energy which ended in their newest single, the lyrically beautiful, ‘2 Bodies 1 Heart’. At least that seemed the band’s plan until the audience’s fuckwit section chimed up again demanding to hear the band’s most well known song. Kindly, the band obliged but the performance was slightly tainted by the fact a hefty chunk of the audience were there for one song and were not satisfied with the emotive performance they’d already been given.
