It’s not for the cock, it’s for the pop

Metronomy- “Night’s Out”

After what seems like an age of waiting, cathing support slots about once a week and getting excited over new remixes, the second album from Metronomy is finally here.

“Nights Out” starts with a woozy and perplexing intro but once “The End of You Too” builds up steam, the album flows with full force.

“My Heart Rate Rapid” is a bizarre creation, sounding simultaneously like a great pop song and also like nothing that’s ever happened before. It will make your legs wobble, your pupils take over the whites of your eyes and a devilish grin spread across your face.

Recent single “Holiday” is equally as weird and even more wonderful, with helium sucking synths and tight, elastic bass lines- it relentlessly keeps pace throughout.

Metronomy have managed to successfully transform themselves from what was basically a one man bedroom recorded project of the first album “Pip Paine”. Whilst some of the primal and raw dance is lost from that first album (tracks like “You Could Easily Have Me” are never really equalled here), “Nights Out” is, overall, a much better album. The band have benefited from emphasising the accessibility of their sound as well as the more unusual elements. As a result, they now sound just a tiny bit like Britney or Justin Timberlake or Girls Aloud in skinny jeans and plimsolls whilst scoffing drugs like pic ‘n’ mix and seeing what the musical upshot of this is. It really is quite fantastic.

After perfecting their sound through excessive touring, Metronomy are now much more of a genuine and credible band than the former versions of themselves. They now have melodies galore, electro pop hooks at every turn and only the occasional instrumental track, yet all done with the oddest choices of instruments and sounds.  They’ve toured with and supported every vaguely indie artist under the sun, now it’s time for Metronomy to step out of the shadows and into the limelight like the dance pop of “Nights Out” clearly suggests they can.

“Nights Out” is released on September 8th on Becuase Music.
