The Dodos-’Visiter’

Two years after their debut release, American folk duo The Dodos return with their second album ‘Visiter’ (”misspelled because it’s from a drawing this kid gave us”. The pair have produced a record which is nothing short of a sheer delight using guitars, drums, keybords, horns and God knows what else to create a rich tapestry of acoustic, psychedelic indie sounds. The vocals sounds like a mix between Death Cab’s Ben Gibbard and The Coral’s James Skelly if he was from the band’s hometown of San Francisco and are impressively emotive. Another oustanding edition to this record is definitely the drums, most notably on recent single ‘Fools’ where almost playful rim hits are played alongside booming toms and bass drum to create an almost tribal sound.

What’s maybe most impressive about ‘Visiter’ is the fact that The Dodos have managed to produce a record that not only stands up to but maybe exceeds the efforts of their contemporaries (bands like Ra Ra Riot, Frightened Rabbit and Born Ruffians) between just the two of them. Despite the album’s fairly low-fi production it’s almost impossible to imagine how songs like ‘Red and Purple’, which are just brimming with sounds, being recreated live by just two of them but the idea of this is certainly an intriguing one.

The band will be touring our fair shores for most of September, find dates on their myspace.
