Bonde do Role

This year is not just my first Dot to Dot, it is my first ever indoor festival. Even though I am slightly unsure of what to expect I can’t imagine anyone in my top five not pulling off amazing shows. There are some obvious choices left out, such as Erol Alkan, The Cribs and Metronomy who are far from needing any recommendation, my list is made up of bands you may have not made your mind up about.Â

1. Architecture in Helsinki

It’s only recently that I’ve got into this band but I’ve already fallen in love with the light hearted too and fro banter between singers, backed by quirky, summer melodies. The lyrics are filled with quaint childish observations which makes their music nothing but pleasant to listen to. This year the only release from these six Australians has been ‘We Died, They Remixed’ a collection of, you guessed it, remixes. While they’ve been letting DJs such as Metronomy do the work for them it’ll be interesting to see if they’ve got any new material to play. It’s a 14+ in Trent Union which hopefully means there’ll be a bit of space for anyone who’s got there dancing legs on. Download- Do the Whirlwind, It’s 5!,2. Bonde do Role

This threesome have already had John’s hat tipped to them but I feel it would be criminal to not have them in my top 5. Despite their first UK release being the week of Dot to Dot festival Bonde do Role already have a reputation for causing mayhem at their live shows, their SXSW performance involving an ice cream van will go down in history. Their songs, made up of beats from 80’s classics with shouting over the top, are oozing energy just coming out of my bassless ipod headphones so expect a riot when the hit the downstairs of Stealth.

Download- Solta O Frango, Marina Do Bairro, Tobaco

3. These New Puritans

The first band on my list that isn’t all about jumping around with an enormous childish grin plastered to your face. Their dark, electronic sound suggests Joy Division as an obvious influence while Jack Barnett provides complex vocals not dissimilar to Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand. There’s no other band like this playing at this years festival, plus as they are receiving nothing but enthusiastic praise for everything they do it wont be long before they’re huge and then you can say you saw them first. For those two reasons alone you should be in Rescue Rooms at half five but if you need another one just start downloading.

Download- Elvis, Navigate.

4.we are THE PHYSICS

Here is a band that has no trouble earning praise from me. This is another show that will be bursting at the rafters with energy and there’ll be a band on stage that has masses of rapport with its audience. we are THE PHYSICS promises to be an underestimated highlight of the night with dance moves and loud guitars guaranteed.  The band have carelessly been shoved into the upstairs at Trent Union so get there early and be prepared to sweat!

Download- Less Than Three.

5. Kate Nash

Harshly dubbed as ‘the next Lily Allen’ Kate Nash has that something extra in a world saturated with female singer/song writers. All that links her to Allen is her London accent, her lyrics provide masses more depth and you can’t help but to relate to songs like ‘Birds’ and ‘Merry Happy’. Also as Miss Nash is one of the more well known artists on this years line up here might be one of your only chances to start a traditional festival sing-a-long to recent single ‘Caroline’s a Victim’. Go and see her if, like me, you’re the type to get a touch sentimental at gigs.

Download- Birds, Merry Happy, Caroline’s a Victim.

They didn’t quite make the list but are still worth seeing:

Blood Red Shoes, Late of The Pier, Sky Larkin, Chromeo, Fear of Flying, Hot Club De Paris.
