80s Matchbox B-line Disaster/ Cuban Crimewave @ Rescue Rooms

Imagine a world which is part an Evil Mighty Boosh and part Victorian England and 80s Matchbox would be the soundtrack. But more an all that in a moment.

Firstly, Cuban Crimewave jerk, headbang and throw shapes to grab the attention of a half interested audience. Despite silly gimmicks such as all members wearing bandanas over their mouths, Cuban Crimewave are actually very tight and their two bass attack proves an interesting, if a little odd, listen.

80s Matchbox burst onstage and dive straight into their raucous live set. Half a sinister boogie, half speeded up stoner rock– 80s Matchbox are as thrilling, if not more so, live as they are on record.

Guy McKnight is an excellent frontman and is on great form tonight. When he’s not diving into the crowd or tossing his black locks back for his hell raising screams, he’s striking up over exaggerated poses to the audience. He’s like Iggy, Jagger and Cave rolled into one big, bad rock slave horse. The man looks possessed, sinister and is truly captivating.

Old favourites, “Celebrate Your Mother” and “Mister Mental” are, well, utterly mental, but newer songs off “The Garden” EP also make the room feel like a herd of gothic elephants are moshing on the dance floor. Which is great, obviously.

With sharp guitar riffs firing off the tons of rumbling bass, and big, dark drums rattling around McKnight’s howling vocals, 80s Matchbox are a very tight unit. The band know exactly how to hold an audience in the palm of their hand and shake and squeeze them into mercy. Although the set could have been longer, with an encore, the gig was still a great success overall and proves 80s Matchbox are still one of the best cult bands in years.

80s Matchbox B-line Disaster– weird, raw to the bone and defiantly one of a kind.

P.s- This post is picture-less becuase computers hate me, but at least I actually posted it this time. Hopefully a picture will be up soon, but as Captain isn’t back until a day before Leeds festival, perhaps not.
