It’s not for the cock, it’s for the love of Canada.

Tokyo Police Club and Operahouse @ The Social, Nottingham.

The support this evening comes from London based Operahouse who, despite firstly appearing dangerously middle of the road (think Pigeon Detectives and Little Man Tate), provide a worthy and entertaining start to tonight’s proceedings. Unlike many bands striving to be the next big indie chart toppers they show themselves to all be worthy musicians maintaining a sharp, tight set which evokes comparisons to more respectable bands such as The Maccabees. It is also difficult not to be charmed by singer Johnny Lloyd who ticks every major record label’s boxes, good looking, great voice and most importantly, oozing confidence. As their set goes on the quality of their songs only improves with highlights including ‘Wrecking Ball’ and recent single ‘Man Nextdoor’.

Needless to say when Tokyo Police Club make their way to the stage the audience is suitably warmed up and straight from the opener, ‘Cheer It On’, there is considerable movement in the audience for such a small venue. The Strokes are an obvious influence of the band and singer David Monks’ Casablancas style vocals are flawless throughout the set despite his energetic performance that often leaves him breathlessly grinning between songs, which is hugely endearing. One cannot help but project this feeling towards the entire group who, despite a year of touring, seem to be enjoying the set as much as their more than enthusiastic audience. The only notable flaw of the show tonight is the restrictions that come with having such a small stage which results in Keyboard player Graham Wright being restricted to the side of the stage behind a speaker. Although this may not seem like a huge shame the small glimpses caught of him dancing like he’s in a dirty electro band but to the rolling bass and high tempo drums suggest otherwise.

Operahouse currently have no tour dates but ‘Man Nextdoor’ is available from itunes.

Sounds good, wish I could have gone but I had something else on…can’t remember what right now. I’d have liked to have seen them at Leeds too, but Mr.Bizzle was much too tempting.
