Bloc Party-Intimacy
2005 was the year that saw many of today’s stadium dwelling indie bands start their rise to the epic fame and fortune they enjoy today. Among the more obvious future heavy hitters such as Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers and Arctics Monkeys were four geekily dressed and impressively skilled musicians fronted a talented performer and lyricist. Los Campesinos!- “We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed”
About nine months ago, this welsh based seven piece released their debut album to what was a very positive, semi cult response, if not a transformation into mega stars. Their first album, “Hold On Now Youngster…”, and the following months, may have not seen them come crashing home smothered in hype whilst being crammed involuntarily into our mouths, but did in fact build up quite an impressive, dedicated fan base.

Lovvers- “Think” (Wichita)
Silence. The fast, wild strums of a battered electric guitar. Drums hit so hard, the skins sound at breaking point. A maniac’s voice, wide eyed with hunger, through a tinny, lo fi microphone. This is the sound of “Human Hair”, the opening song on Lovvers mini album “Think” and, before you know it, the blood is racing around your body and you’re wide awake. Throughout this release, the music refuses to slow down and, with the 7 songs clocking in at just under 13 minutes, “Think” is a fast and powerful attack on the senses.

The Dodos-’Visiter’
Two years after their debut release, American folk duo The Dodos return with their second album ‘Visiter’ (”misspelled because it’s from a drawing this kid gave us”. The pair have produced a record which is nothing short of a sheer delight using guitars, drums, keybords, horns and God knows what else to create a rich tapestry of acoustic, psychedelic indie sounds. Metronomy- “Night’s Out”
After what seems like an age of waiting, cathing support slots about once a week and getting excited over new remixes, the second album from Metronomy is finally here.

Micah P. Hinson- “Micah P. Hinson And The Red Empire Orchestra” (Full Time Hobby)
Starting with the soft, 1940s Americana style opener “Come Home Quickly, Darlin’”, Hinson continues in this vein throughout the album. With slow, wistful piano led ballads and camp fire style little ditties, this is an album with a lot of familiarity.

Ten Kens- “Ten Kens” FatCat Records
Sometimes, very occasionally, you come across something pretty much by accident which turns out to be fantastic. You wonder what you did without it and you get scared at the thought that you might not have ever crossed paths with it. It basically never happens, but with the debut album from Ten Kens, it’s fucking happened.

Late of The Pier- Fantasy Black Channel
After first triggering the hype mongers, the A and R men and a wide cross section of the press, not to mention an army of music lovers, into a frenzy almost two years ago, the highly anticipated debut from Late Of The Pier is (nearly) with us. As a band more than content to do things by their own watch, they’ve decided to put the album out now rather than jumping to premature attention when all the blogs were first going mental about them.

Lykke Li-Youth Novels-EMI Sweden
The female singer/songwriter label is one that has been struggling to keep its credibility above water for the past couple of years since a group of nice, young ladies decided to drag it arse end through the press. While this circus becomes ever more pathetic other, less headline grabbing, women have been devoting their unfried senses to not wasting their talent and churning out wonderful records from Laura Marling’s ‘Alas, I cannot swim‘ to Bojrk’s ‘Volta‘ and now ‘Youth Novels’ can be added to the list.
