Los Campesinos! @ Rescue Rooms- 20/10/2007

In terms of hopes for a gig with great crowd interaction and atmosphere, it’s not a great sign when the merchandise stall guys seem to make up a third of the crowd for the support band. This being the case, You Say Party! We Say Die! head stagewards with something of a challenge ahead.

Foals, Metronomy and Great Eskimo Hoax, Rescue Rooms 04/10/07.

Tonight was a night of great promise, great electro-pop outfit Metronomy to start followed by Foals who’ve got a wild live reputation and have released three undeniably catchy singles so far this year. How could it possibly go wrong?

The Maccabees- Rock City 10/10/2007

Laura Marling and her band make a jaunty, pretty pleasing pop folk sound that, despite much talking, gets a fairly positive reaction from tonights crowd. Marling has quite obvious songwriting talent and displays a fantastic voice, however her backing band succeed in sucking out a lot of soul from her performance and make her sound like many of the other post-Libs bands with Kooks-ish ambitions.

The Bodega Ball

Tonight The Social are celebrating a change into The Bodega Social Club- a change which, incidentally, actually changes nothing but the sign outside the venue. No matter; any excuse for an all night party with a quality line up is a good enough one.

Arcade Fire- “Neon Bible” Video

On October 6th, Arcade Fire revealed their new video for the song “Neon Bible”.  After a week or so of letting the tension build via cryptic online messages, the video was posted on their  ”beonlineb” (an anagram of Neon Bible) website. The video is simple but, to put it shortly, excellent.

It’s not for the cock, it’s for reliving your childhood.

Gwen Stefani and CSS, Wembley Arena.

With Madonna running around saving orphans and Britney waddling around L.A. desperate for wigs and drugs it seems that the list of music heros from my childhood reads like a very boring issue of heat. That’s why I thank God for Gwen Stefani who’s the only credible one left and keeping the 10 year old girl inside me alive.

It’s not for the cock, it’s for an explosive gig, yeah?

Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip @ Stealth, Nottingham 29/09/07

On paper, on record and on the seemingly most valuable of things (these days)- myspace, Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip are great: Funny, clever, dry and sharp. However, at a live gig, it’s simply impossible to get over the fact that you’re watching a bloke on a laptop and another with a beard forming words that are lost through the PA system.

In the last three days we have received over 1300 hits. There are clearly many of you out there reading what we think about music. I’d rather you than me.

SABREPULSE

Music has for too long involved musical instruments. They are cliche now. Other art forms have evolved from their traditional media. Art is no longer just paintings and sculptures, it can be created from dustbins and syringe: elements with meaning to our lives.
