Dizzee Rascal, Leeds Uni, 02/11/07
Joe Lean and The Jing Jang Jong, Dizzee Rascal, London Astoria, 09/11/07
Two gigs, two cities and only one week to separate them. The Astoria had much more going for it than the Leeds date. Not only was it the final night of Dizzee’s seven date UK Tour it was also his homecoming show in the birthplace of grime. However, as the party uni of the North, Leeds put up an honorable fight.

Holy Fuck@ Stealth 17/11/2007
Tonight, after the growing (in crew members and popularity) Tomb Crew have pelted out another insane mix of grime/drum and bass/electro mash ups, whipped up a complete storm and then vacated the area, it’s the Canadian Holy Fuck’s turn to bring the noise. Piles upon piles of electronic gear, with wires tangling all over the place, are hauled onto the stage. And then it keeps coming until the stage resembles something more like the inside of a spaceship in a 1970s sci-fi movie.

Soulwax- Most of The Remixes…
The remix: an essential and integral part of new music which constantly pushes and evolves things into new directions. Or, the remix: part of the scenester faux bullshit with which if you’re not up to speed on who’s reworked the reworking of last weeks anthem you’re definitely not cool? Either way, 2007 has been partly defined by remixes of other songs and with great timing, or a great PR team, the DJ kings Soulwax release a best of collection of their remixes. But the really question is, of course, is it any good?

I haven’t posted on here for a LONG time.
I’ve been in America, in fact, still am. It has its ups, and it has its downs, but overall it’s pretty incredible. Read the rest of this entry »

Have you ever tried to look for perfection? Something which can’t be improved by anything at all. The best of its kind. The very thing all others like it strive to be. Like Reenie Hollis is to the group of attractive female bassists. Well, in Daft Punk’s One More Time I have found perfection. I’m not saying it’s the perfect song (that’d be silly). No no, this is the perfect p.

Late of The Pier, 2manydjs, Soulwax/Leeds Union/28.10.07
Too many gigs these days are slaves to scheduling. Everyday bands play too early or too late due to curfews, licensing and to make way for much more lucrative club nights and audiences across the world are suffering. One of the genres hit hardest is dance because once a dance act breaks free from the bedroom decks their live shows are destined not only for 10.30 curfews but for overpriced beer and an audience filled with 15 year olds saving the rave. This situation is highly undesirable when you consider that live dance music can only really be appreciated in the wee hours after one too many vodka mixers/tequila slammers/cheap white wines (delete where necessary). Thank God, then, for Soulwax who not only used their autumn tour to promote their remix album but also to bring dance music as it should be to the masses, six late night hours packed with a killer line up, flashing lights and fucking tunes.

Editors, Rock City, 25/10/07.
Although this was the first time I’d seen Editors play a headline show it was not my first experience of the Birmingham four piece live. I had seen a handful of medicore festival and support shows before 2005’s ‘The Back Room’ was released and although I always appreciated their first album I would never have never called myself a fan if it wasn’t for tonight’s epic performance.

Arcade Fire - Nottingham Ice Arena- 31/10/2007
If the summer festivals in the UK were among Arcade Fire’s most triumphant gigs (with Glastonbury being the crowning moment) then tonight at the Nottingham Arena, it suddenly becomes clear just how much this band has grown- even since the start of the year. Here are thousands of people, many of whom are, naturally for an Arena gig, the sort who buy a couple of Best Ofs a year and believe cutting edge music to come from the Joe Whiley show, who have forked out £23 to see a Canadian collective of misfits slightly out of sync with modern popular culture.
